Celebrating a True Hematite Legend: Bill Schrandt Named 2026 Grand Marshal & Halls of Excellence Inductee

Ishpeming’s 4th of July festivities are always a time for community, tradition, and hometown pride. This year, we have an extra special reason to celebrate as we honor a man whose life and career perfectly reflect what it means to be a Hematite: Bill Schrandt.

Not only has Bill been named the 2026 Grand Marshal for the Ishpeming 4th of July Parade, but he is also being inducted into the prestigious Ishpeming Halls of Excellence!

A Legacy in Red, White, and Blue

For 46 years, Bill has been a staple of our holiday celebrations, perhaps best known for his iconic role as Uncle Sam. In fact, Bill was an original member of the committee that organized Ishpeming’s very first 4th of July parade. Realizing the event needed its most patriotic symbol, Bill teamed up with family from Ohio, Minnesota, and his own mother-in-law and wife to craft the legendary uniform we still see today.

Each year, Bill dons his top hat and hits the parade route early. Walking side-to-side down the streets, he stops to visit with families and pose for pictures. He is truly woven into the fabric of our local history—some families boast yearly photos with Bill that span from their children’s infancy well into their twenties!

Beyond his festive spirit, Bill is a true patriot. He is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam. For Bill, one of the most meaningful parts of Independence Day is turning onto Hematite Drive for the chance to visit with fellow veterans along the route.

Honored for a Lifetime of Dedication

Bill’s contributions to our town extend far beyond a single day in July. As a proud graduate of Ishpeming High School, he has remained a steadfast supporter of his alma mater, giving back in ways that have strengthened both the school district and the city of Ishpeming.

Following his graduation and military service, Bill built a reputation as a trusted leader and community advocate. His professional and volunteer work has always been rooted in the core values he learned growing up here—hard work, integrity, and loyalty. Because he has consistently sought to uplift others and preserve the unique traditions that make Ishpeming so special, the Ishpeming Public Schools are proudly welcoming him into the Halls of Excellence.

  • Come support Bill and his fellow inductees as they are honored for their lifelong dedication to Ishpeming.
• The Ishpeming 4th of July Parade
  • When: Saturday, July 4, 2026
  • Be sure to give Bill a resounding shout, a salute, and a wave as he trades his usual walking route to proudly lead the parade as our 2026 Grand Marshal!
